Carolyne Swayze - Founder and CEO/President

Meet the SJC Board of Directors

10/22/2016 – SACRAMENTO, CA. –
Carolyne Swayze, SJC Founder, and Chief Executive Officer serving in the capacity of President. Carolyne has had a passion for jazz for almost fifty years. Born and raised in Chicago, she admits that as a young girl she would sneak into the Chicago jazz clubs, particularly along Rush Street to hear the likes of Nat Cole, George Shearing, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn... In the early 1970s, she relocated to California and began singing in the Fresno jazz and supper clubs to supplement the income of her day job. In the latter part of 1970, she relocated again, this time to San Francisco. During the day, she labored as a senior investigator for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and later a deputy director, but at night, she says, “the hills of the bay area came alive with the sound of the music of jazz trios that played in every restaurant and show lounge, and I was right in the middle”. She also began singing with the Jimmy Diamond Orchestra, whom she eventually married, going on to work the hotel and country club circuits for more than twenty-five years. In 1997, she relocated once again, this time to Sacramento and computed daily to San Francisco before retiring in 2007. Upon retirement, she dabbled in nonprofits where she gained invaluable experience. Toying with the idea of starting her own club, she soon realized that she would never be able to justify or afford the investment required to start a jazz club and thus, began scouting the prospects of the nonprofit model which is common to the performing arts. Thus, the Sacramento Jazz Cooperative was born based on a model working in some cities.
